Pineapples (Ananas comosus)
It is thought that the fruit was named pina by the Spanish due to the fruits resemblance to a Pinecone. It is a native of the Americas and is a member of the bromeliad family.

Just like cashews, the fruit is a native of Brazil and Paraguay where Tupi-Guarani tribes carried the plant throughout the tropics of the Americas . Christopher Columbus actually sampled the fruit on the 4th November 1493 in Guadeloupe , having been given it by the local Carib Indians as a sign of welcome. Hawaii received the fruit in early 1800s and became the largest exporting country of canned pineapple in the world by the 1950s.

Today, Pineapples are diced and sugared for the confectionery and packing trade mostly in Thailand.
