| Melon (Cucumis Melo)
Food historians have been unable to determine the exact origin of the melon.
Some say it was in Persia that it was first eaten, others say Afghanistan .
Cantaloupe melons were first cultivated by the Egyptians who depicted melons
in their paintings, and Northwest India, going as far back as 2400 BCE. It is
also recorded in the Old Testament that when the Hebrew people wandered for
40 years in the desert they craved "the fish, which we did eat in Egypt
freely; the cucumbers, and the melons."
Marco Polo, sometime around 1254 and 1324 CE on his way to China, travelled
to the city of Shibirghan in Afghanistan where he is said to have found
"the best melons in the world in very great quantity which they dry in this
manner: they cut them all around in slices like strips of leather, then put
them in the sun to dry, where they become sweeter than honey "
Hundreds of years later, the cantaloupe melons are cut into strips , diced
and dried in a very similar way in Thailand.
