Banana (Musa)
It is thought Bananas grew in the wild in South East Asia, from India to New Guinea. Archaeological excavations in the Indus valley indicate that bananas may have been cultivated around 6000 years ago but the plant was first described in print in a Hindu holy book called the Ramayana.

Despite the fact that Alexander the Great came across the Banana plant in India, his men did not attempt to bring the plant into the West. The Arabs began growing Bananas in North Africa from where the Portuguese imported it into the Iberian peninsula. The Bananas plant was then brought to the Americas in the early 1500s.

Saba variety bananas are processed into Banana chips, almost exclusively in the Philippines. Some work is also being done with the Cavendish varieties to ensure less oil absorption and a crispier product.
